Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

Occasionally I have seen this problem in both Intrepid and Hardy: I
guess it might be due to a timeout in the gnome session or dbus. I
suspect it might have something to do with changing wireless networks -
I go from a 10.1.1.x address to a 10.0.0.y address when I suspend,
changes offices, and resume. Nautilus also segfaulted near the time of
the error (see attached dmesg) so this might be relevant.

gedit does eventually run, but it can take more than a minute. If you
have tried to open something from nautilus gnome-panel freezes as well
until gedit appears. During this time there's absolutely no indication
from the system that anything is amiss except of course that gnome-panel
stops working and gedit isn't shown as you requested.

Restarting X (eg by logging out and back in) resolves the problem.

The latest time this happened on Jaunty beta:

ubuntu 9.04
gedit 2.26.0-0ubuntu2

I took an strace of gedit trying to open a file in case it might be
useful and a subsequent one of it working normally after I restarted X.
I don't know if it is useful though because I'm pretty sure the strace
stopped on the final "select(" long before gedit appeared.
