Binary package hint: update-manager
I followed the upgrade instructions from Intrepid to Jaunty beta, the
upgrade appeared to work correctly, with one noted problem (fonttools
failed to upgrade). Besides the noted problem the upgrade ran to
completion (apparently normally in all other respects) and then after
the restart problems were noted. First very high loads making email
(Thunderbird), web (Firefox) very hard to use, every few minutes they
will gray back and become unresponse for some length of time. Also in
email I noted that while in Intrepid I had the meta key turned on and it
no longer was working in Jaunty. I went to system -> preferences ->
keyboard to verify that the meta key was still selected as the right
windows key. I got an odd error at that point that gnome-settings-
daemon could not be run (screen shot attached). The machine is
randomly exhibiting high loads and is unresponsive to the point of
needing to switch to a backup machine to get work done.
As to the high load issues, I though perhaps the problem might be
related to tracker so I left the machine alone all weekend to allow
tracker to compete it's indexing. No real change on Monday.
I ran the liveCD Beta and the machine runs normally as expected, so the
problem is not the Beta (which is really quite nice) but apparently with
the upgrade process. The noted random problems are exhibited with
existing users or a new user of the machine.
