I have added VLC from th repository and found that it will play the above mpg correctly. I knew the file was ok because I tested again under windows but I thought I'd better prove the file could be loaded and played in Ubuntu also.
I have retested after installing VLC and the latest round of updates and still no update has fixed the mpg playing issue.
