I have seen that, when this issue happens, to display the battery icon you can suspend and then resume the PC. So: 1) the PC is only running with AC power (battery not present) 2) hibernate the PC 3) insert the battery 4) resume the PC (the battery is not displayed) 5) suspend the PC 6) resume it (at this point all should work ok)
