I'm sorry I couldn't provide the information you required, I had trouble obtaining it, as I'm not a seasoned linux user (yet!). However it may be somewhat useful to know that I have since done a complete reinstallation of 8.10 intrepid and haven't had any problems at all with Rhythmbox since. I think the problem may have been caused by audio drivers/other software in the latest ubuntu studio bundle + kernel which I was running when this problem arose.
