after updating to jaunty, the issue remained. on my previous tests ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/poppler/+bug/293832/comments/50 ) i only downgraded the cups package, leaving other related packages up to date. thus i conclude that it is a regression in cups.
