restart is to restart a running instance, why don't you use "start" if it's not 
running?
          1. I can't start gdm, because it hangs on text mode (on checking 
battery state at this moment) - i CAN write, but it doesn't recognise commands 
that i wrote. 
          2. Restart in Ubuntu 8.10 (or older) = quit gdm -> text mode -> 
return to gdm !
