Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce (requries authenticated proxy):
1. Open Network Proxy 2. Select "Manual Proxy configuration" 3. Enter HTTP proxy host and port 4. Click "Details" 5. Check "Use Authentication" 6. Enter user/pass 7. Click Close 8. Click Close 9. Open a new terminal 10. "echo $http_proxy" Note that it only contains http://host:port/, not the user and password. This affects anything spawned within gnome. I'm on Dapper, suggested workaround is to use options within your apps for authenticated proxies.
