:~$grep SoundOnLogin /etc/gdm/gdm.conf
# If SoundOnLogin is true, then the greeter will beep when login is ready for
# user input. If SoundOnLogin is a file and the greeter finds the 'play'
#SoundOnLogin=true
SoundOnLoginFile=/usr/share/sounds/question.wav
# If SoundOnLoginSuccess, then the greeter will play a sound (as above) when a
#SoundOnLoginSuccess=false
#SoundOnLoginSuccessFile=
# If SoundOnLoginFailure, then the greeter will play a sound (as above) when a
#SoundOnLoginFailure=false
#SoundOnLoginFailureFile=

Delete the link to the file. In my case this is
/usr/share/sounds/question.wav

Hopefully this link doesn't get put there again from any updates.
