Well, but it has something to do with Gnome, see my initial comment: "When shutting down the system via "System -> Shut down...", there is now always an annoying speaker beep [...] Using the Fast User Switch Applet the sound is not played." Unfortunately, in Jaunty there remains only one 'beepy' way to shut down.
