You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Disabling "Automatically remember running applications when logging out"
in the Startup Applications Preferences window doesn't disable
application that were previously remembered. Gedit, gnome-terminal and
firefox still fire up automatically even after several reboots/relogs.

Those applications are not listed in startup programs/

A clean logout seems to be required in order to prevent those
applications from auto-launching, however, in many desktop situations a
proper log-out may be very rare, far outnumbered by kernel hangs (in my
case, due to known issues with ext4), or physical issues (power outages,
etc).

** Affects: gnome-session (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Confirmed
