Upstream bug about the gnome-terminal behavior is :

report, the comment from upstream is:

"I don't think so. No tabbed GNOME app does this destructive behaviour on a
single click on a region that's not a button clearly marked as destructive.
"
you might want to comment on the upstream report if you really want to have 
this included by default on Gnome.
