Dapper upgrade from Breezy which bombed half way through the install phase followed by dpkg --configure -a which made the machine apparently functional.
On a fresh install of abiword on Dapper and setting System, Preferences, Preferred applications, Browser, Firefox, the abiword page opens as the note above suggests.
