Same problem here.
But, I am able to import the pictures if:
a) connect the camera
b) run from the command line:
gthumb --import-photos
or,
gnome-volume-manager-gthumb
$ cat /etc/issue

gthumb doesn't work with gphoto (was please disable gphoto2 backend for Jaunty)
