i felt we had established that "just do not close the program" is not an
acceptable solution!

gimp enthusiasts hate klipper because it leeches everything it can get.
if they were for a pragmatic solution they would not offer that much
date but just an internal pointer. or klipper simply special-cases this
scenario and everything would just work.

condemning klipper because there seems to be the golden bullet solution
of integrating something into x does not take us anywhere.

one should elaborate a plan of how to get the x-solution because it is
the right thing! but it will take its time to specify, implement and
distribute. for the transition time we should use a program like klipper
because there are just a few showstoppers to fix until it can be used as
a decent quality workaround.

so i definitely suggest the following two-step approach:
1. use klipper to get things working in near future. pragmatically fix
showstoppers as with gimp and problems with binary data. this could be done
within weeks.
2. enhance the x server to make things "just work". this will take months to
plan and coordinate and with implementation and release this could be more than
a year. so an transitional solution as proposed in step 1 makes sense.
