Ok I reinstalled jaunty in the vm and in fact gnome-settings-daemon is never started when using the nxclient to connect, when I lauch it through a xterm I get the same error, so I think the problem lies definitely with the nomachine client and not with ubuntu be it jaunty or karmic because when I connect with rdesktop (using the vrdp port of virtualbox) everything works fine, the same is true if I enable xdmcp in gdm and connect through it. Sorry for wasting your time, I think this bug is not a bug...
