You have been subscribed to a public bug:
dh_desktop just looks for new .desktop files in /usr/share/applications.
But packages which aren't installed through the offical repositorys
should by convention be installed in /usr/local and so also the correct
folder for their .desktop file is /usr/local/share/applications. But
dh_desktop doesn't care about this folder.
That's imo a bug.
