I can confirm that trying to shut down on Karmic when logged in has the same 
effect as logging off, even without auto-login enabled. This problem has 
existed since the new GDM was introduced in Karmic and was only temporally 
solved once. 
Sometimes GDM crashes when trying to shut down, and you are given a console.

This probably also affects suspend and hibernate.
