Ubuntu currently has 2 media players installed: totem and rhythmbox.
This is mostly because ubuntu (and gnome) don't ship a complete media player.
So where totem lacks, rhythmbox is good and vice versa.
I think that shipping only one media player has advantages over shipping 2
different:
- less space needed
- less packages needed
- less code to maintain
- avoid code duplication
- learn to use only one application
But unfortunately this can't be done because rhythmbox does not play
video files and dvds, and totem does not have an integrated media
library.
Ubuntu could help gnome in focusing on this direction
