You have been subscribed to a public bug: Backlight controls (both keyboard-based Fn-Left / Fn-Right and in Power Management) do not work on the Acer Aspire Timeline 4810T. This may impact the 3810T and 5810T models also, as they use similar hardware.
Examining UbuntuForums I located a temporary fix (in http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=7673757&postcount=2) which is to run the following from a terminal: xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native This does cause the backlight controls (both keyboard and Power Management) to work. However, the setting reverts on each startup. I examined /etc/X11/xorg.conf and found only a default file. Reconfiguring using dpkg-reconfigure generated the same thing again.
