Yes, I understand that, but it's a relatively painless way of freeing disk space. It doesn't matter how it does it, all that matters is that *some* disk space is freed, whether packages are the cause of the high disk usage or not.
I suppose that it comes down to the answer to this question: If a user is running out of disk space, what would you advise them to do?
