Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Upon installing the gnome-stracciatella-session, for example, the
Session selector combo box in gdm is stretched to fit that (rather long)
session name. This is really problematic, because on a netbook it pushes
the language and keyboard options to the left (possibly off the screen,
as is the case with my netbook's small resolution)!

I don't know off hand, but there must be a way to have the text in these
combo boxes ellipsized so that they will fit on smaller screens...
