I have a very similar issue. Since I upgraded my laptop to Karmic (9.10)
each morning when I boot up and start evolution it crashes the first
time. I usually run "evolution --force-shutdown" from the console and
start up again with no problems. I did not notice this problem
previously (other than the normal random crashes). The attached
screenshot shows my screen when it crashes. Notice the Inbox unread
items count.
