Ubuntu 9.04 - the Jaunty Jackalope - released in April 2009

PROBLEM:
Static is heard when PCM volume is muted. Unmuting the PCM volume via
the GNOME Volume Control v2.1 mixer does not appear to function
correctly.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Click on the speaker icon, and select "Volume Control..." button.
2) Click on the "Mute" button for PCM volume to mute PCM volume.
-- (Static is heard instead of sounds.)
3) Click on the "Mute" button for PCM volume again to unmute PCM volume.
-- (Static is still heard instead of sounds. The "unmute" didn't appear to
work.)
To correct this problem:
-- Move the PCM slider up/down and sound returns to normal.
EXPECTED BEHAVIOR:
There are actually two problems:
1) There should be no static when PCM volume is muted. (This is minor, but
irritating.)
2) The bigger problem is: unmuting the PCM volume should result in the volume
returning to the slider level automatically, without having to move the PCM
volume slider.
NOTE: The automatic reporting tool claims this is a problem in "yelp";
the Help file I was in was the GNOME Volume Control v2.1, though, I am
not sure if they are one and the same or if this distinction matters.
