I just played an entire album without Rythmbox screwing up on me. Looks like my theory was correct. The issue was related to the Profile selection in the new sound system. Changing it to [Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output + Analog Stereo input] seemed to have fixed the problem... so far. "knocks on wood" Why it was on [Analog Stereo Duplex] as the default, I have no idea but the issue is solved.
