Hi Robert,

I upgraded to Karmic final, but the issue is still there. My home folder
is not encrypted.

By the way, I did several tests and I found out very important
information.

I forgot to mention that I have 4 partitions. These partitions are:
Jaunty (updated), Karmic (fresh install on RC, updated), old windows xp,
and a data partition which has no operating system, just files.

I did several boot tests. Please note that I started doing these tests
after doing shutdown from Karmic, having in /dev/sda the grub that was
installed from the Jaunty partition.

Here the tests:

1. Reboot and load Karmic, autologin works.
2. Reboot and load Karmic, autologin works.
3. Reboot and load Jaunty.
4. Reboot and load Karmic, autologin fails. I did manual login in gdm.
5. Reboot and load Karmic, autologin works.
6. Reboot and load Jaunty.
7. Reboot and load Karmic, autologin fails. I did manual login in gdm.
8. After login, I did "sudo grub-install /dev/sda". Now grub from Karmic is
successfully installed.
9. Reboot and load Karmic, autologin works.
10. Reboot and load Jaunty.
11. Reboot and load Karmic, autologin fails. I did manual login in gdm.
12. Reboot and load Karmic, autologin works.
13. Reboot and load windows xp.
14. Reboot and load Karmic, autologin works.
15. Reboot and load Jaunty.
16. Reboot and load windows xp.
17. Reboot and load Karmic, autologin works.

As you can see, grub configuration doesn't seem to affect to the issue.
Even after using windows, the error is not produced. Only after shutting
down from Jaunty and rebooting into Karmic the error is produced.

There is also something that may help: When I boot Karmic or windows xp,
the bright of the screen is normal. But when I first load Jaunty, during
boot, boot screen becomes darker and then the system loads, and I use an
automatic command on every login to increase the backlight a bit, but
anyway, when you reboot after using Jaunty, then the grub screen is
darker. The grub screen is never dark after having used Karmic or
windows xp.

So it seems that Xorg or linux kernel introduced some special display
fix for the backlight issue that there was until Jaunty. And now it
seems that, after using any older-than-karmic ubuntu system, gdm doesn't
do autologin.

Maybe it has something to do with BIOS, I really don't know. My laptop
is a Lenovo 3000 C200

Please let me know if there is any other info that can help you.
