I thought this was a bug, but apparently Nautilus was designed this way. I would like to see an option that allows me to show hidden files every time I open Nautilus. If it's not appropriate to make the "Show Hidden Files" setting in the View menu survive successive instantiations, then could there be a setting in Preferences that allows this? For what it's worth, in the Thunar file manager the "Show Hidden Files" setting on the "View" menu DOES survive closing and re-opening.
