Thank you WeatherGod for being with me. After installing linux-backports-modules-alsa- karmic-generic package it works, even if at maximum level volume remains low. Internal microphone is in the web cam QuickCam Messenger, which neither liked Ubuntu 9.4 nor 9.10 but tolerated the previous. In <sound preferences> QuickCam has input but no output.
