I've had this happen a few times. I'm not doing anything in particular
and suddenly the panel disappears and other things start misbehaving
(sound is lost for example). Looking at .xsession-errors I see a bunch
of failed attempts to contact dbus. Restarting dbus from VT1 restarts
the desktop and the mouse doesn't move. The .xsession-errors from the
restart attempt is attached (it was .xsession-errors.old when I
rebooted).
