Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Empathy causes Xorg to ignore the mouse and keyboard under some bizarre
circumstances. Here's how to reproduce it:

1. Start an IM conversation (I was using Google Talk and AIM both times this
happened)
2. Open any menu in a conversation window.
3. Upon receiving a new message in that window, Xorg will lose control of
keyboard and mouse.

Keyboard and mouse become unresponsive, but the Empathy session and
other apps still return information. You can still use Ctrl+Alt+F1 or
likewise to get out to a tty and restart Xorg.
