Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

I am using 9.10, which I downloaded and upgraded a week or so ago. The
problem is that Ubuntu refuses to let me log on. I enter my user name
and password, then watch for a couple minutes as the Ubuntu logo appears
and re-appears, only to be followed by another log-on box. Today I tried
a dozen times, gave up, dual booted in Windows to get my e-mail, then
re-started in Ubuntu. This time it only took about six tries before I
finally got logged on. Today was a tad extreme, but only a tad. I never
can log on in fewer than three or four tries.
