I have been unable to correct this situation. The only way I can stop the 1000s of emails from being "re-downloaded" from the server to the computer (evolution) is to alter the settings so that I no longer keep my emails on the server. However, while this "fixes" the 1000s of emails flooding in my evolution each time I open that application, it messes up my blackberry, which I need for my business.
