I have not seen this problem in Karmic, either in the initial clean install or after subsequent updates. The problem i do have with the gnome power manager in Karmic has been reported in Bug #135548.
I know i should have mentioned this earlier and i apologize for not having, but in case it can still be of use to anyone i'll mention it now: the problem reported in this bug (Bug #312379) went away when i changed from noatime back to relatime in fstab. I don't know why that would be, but the problem and fix were reproducable by making those changes.
