The server is TigerVNC (I think it is the older TightVNC that has been renamed). The problem is that Vinagre (gtk-vnc?) thinks it understands the color protocol used by the server. There is also no color or screen resolution blinking.
There is nothing special in the debug output (attachment in comment #2) and Vinagre thinks the output is 24-bit RGB. xvnc4viewer has the following output with the exact same server (with no problem): $ xvnc4viewer 10.220.50.85 VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.1 for X - built Apr 16 2008 13:23:14 Copyright (C) 2002-2005 RealVNC Ltd.
