I believe I am experiencing the same problem. If I already have a song playing or paused, I have no issues. If the player says "Not Playing", any attempt to start playing a song fails the first time; the track name shows, the play button is depressed, but the song stays at 0:00. I can then make it play by pausing and unpausing, or by double-clicking a new song. For the record, my songs are stored on a NAS, mounted with smbfs. Have not yet checked if this makes a difference.
