Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

release ubuntu 9.10

when I inserted the lines:
# Brother scanners
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"
into "/lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules", I was not allowed to save the
changings and was told that I have no right to write

when I than tried to insert the new device as root via console, I was
told that there was no file descriptor leading to console

now I am no specialist on software but only simple user - and I don't know how
to get out of this misery, so help me please
thank you

oh, when I opened synaptic to find the name of my brother scanner package the
hole system frozened
I made already the experience that synaptic crashes after having used console
