Binary package hint: mount

When I connect an external USB drive, Ubuntu automatically mounts it at
some poorly-named mount point like:

/media/083dfebc-2ce4-4658-97d0-1045fa2972f4

But I already have a mount point I want to use (say /mnt/backupdisk), so
I mount the partition there, then unmount the /media/083dfebc-
2ce4-4658-97d0-1045fa2972f4 mount point using the command:

umount /media/083dfebc-2ce4-4658-97d0-1045fa2972f4

I then go about my business using /mnt/backupdisk. When I'm done, I
unmount that as well:

umount /dev/sdc3

But now, my /mnt/backupdisk directory is gone. Apparently umount
deleted it, I guess because it thought it was the mount point that it
had automatically created when I first connected the drive. But that
directory (/media/083dfebc-2ce4-4658-97d0-1045fa2972f4) now still
exists.

My system info:

[0013][~]$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 9.10
Release: 9.10

[0014][~]$ apt-cache policy mount
