The sequence of screenshots illustrate the behaviour. Here I exemplify that I 
want to
open a file with "gedit" which, of course, is my path, and loadable with 
Alf-F2, for instance.

However, if I choose "Open with another application", I go to a selection 
screen that doesn't
have the intelligence of the Alt-F2 dialog, and I need to put the full path of 
the application
in order to be able to open the file. In this case, it would be 
"/usr/bin/gedit". Of course, new
users won't know this and won't be able to open the file with this text editor.
