Hmmm I'm not affected by this bug anymore; If I filed it, I'm pretty
sure I've been able to reproduce it consistenly.

Aside from several updates passed in the two months, the thing I can
think of is that in the meanwhile I manually added gnome-screensaver to
the startup applications in order to have the key binding work (I had
another bug filed, because it wasn't starting by default and I couldn't
lock the screen), though it doesn't explain why when I filed the bug,
the applet wasn't working, but the key binding was (assuming they call
the same underlying program - otherwise gnome-screensaver could be
related).
