** Description changed: Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver Hi, with everything left to default settings since install, (presumably) the screensaver turns on the backlight even after I manually switch it off. xset dpms force off ; sleep 3 ; gnome-screensaver-command --activate (and its brightness key equivalent) will result in a blank screen and backlight turning on after 3 seconds, regardless of battery or AC, so it is indeed the screensaver in the short run. If I simply turn down the screen brightness to off while on AC and come back 8 hours later, I see bright screensaver images (no blank screen). I have not yet dug into that case, but strongly suspect gnome-screensaver to be the culprit, too. While there are lots of other bugs filed on backlight issues, this one is about default preferences. I would expect any kind of timeout/powermanagement/screensaver never to turn the backlight back on. Even better, to turn it off after a while. hardware: ibook G4 1 Mhz, 0000:00:10.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M9+ 5C63 [Radeon Mobility 9200 (AGP)] (rev 01) install: breezy dvd, then apt-get dist-upgrade; tinkering with airport express, wpa and few other things, but nothing related. Thank you. + + + + edit: maybe I should have filed 2 separate bug reports: + * please make the backlight go off by default (at least after 8 hours) + * please make gnome-screensaver never turn the backlight back on + + Sorry, I don't know how to split it...
