I've seen this problem referenced on the web elsewhere (I cannot recall
where) but I could not find a solution.
gnome-appearance-properties hangs for several seconds after being
started, and spins the CPU (100% on one core).
I did an `strace gnome-appearance-properties` and scrolled through the
output until I found what seemed to be the problem.
(gnome-appearance-properties will hereby be abbreviated as g-a-p)
g-a-p seemed to be reading every background image in its history into
memory.
I then took the liberty of removing all the backgrounds from its list.
However, this did not solve the problem. It still seems to be reading
the background image files, even though they are no longer in its list.
If I rename the directory that the images are in, g-a-p starts up
immediately with no problems. If I rename it back, the problems are
still gone. However, it seems that this may be a bug in g-a-p. It should
not be loading a whole lot of images once they have been removed from
the list.
