At least one other user has posted that they have the same issue (John
Pavlakis). The odd thing is the timing. Sometimes i get as far as
logging in. Sometimes not. Sometimes after i log in I can pull down a
menu, mabe, sometimes it hangs before then.

One thing I noticed is that audio doesn't work when simply running
"startx", whereas with gdm, i get a nice splash screen, with audio, and
a login prompt.

If there was a way to "selectively" disable the features gdm provides
over startx, I would happily do that (turn everything off... urn it on
one thing at a time until it breaks).
