On my laptop, the icon in the notification area shows a cross sign,
looking like the sound is muted, but that's not the case: I hear sound.
If I click on it and press "Sound Preferences", I get a dialog box
saying "Waiting for sound system to respond".
I'm running Lucid 32-bit.
