The effect may be an inappropriately used visual bell, or more probably
something else.
An infuriating side-effect is that the whole window flashes black every
time I change directory.
Fiddling with escape sequences, the flash happens if either of the
following sequence specified a different <title> from the current one:
ESC ] 0 ; <title> BEL
ESC ] 2 ; <title> BEL
Note that the XTerm icon name change sequence (ESC ] 1 ; <title> BEL)
doesn't cause the flash even if title is different.
