Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I am using Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) with gnome-control-center
2.28.1-0ubuntu1.

I have a graphics adapter, PCIID 8086:2562, which compiz blacklists (for
good reason). However, I recently installed a new PCI graphics
card, while leaving the old one in because it is part of the motherboard.
I also installed the proprietary NVIDIA drivers for my new graphics
card.

I commented out the PCI blacklist in /usr/bin/compiz, and compiz (by
running compiz --replace) runs fine. I then decided that I would not
like this to become re-commented whenever compiz gets updated, so I
reinstalled compiz, and added the line "SKIP_CHECKS=yes" to
~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager. Compiz still runs fine (checked by
running metacity --replace and then compiz --replace).

And now, the main point - I go to System->Preferences->Appearance and
set Visual Effects to None. Then I set it back to Custom (I have
installed ccsm-simple), and a window pops up searching for drivers, and
then I am informed that Desktop effects could not be enabled. When I
restart and then log in, my window manager is still set to metacity,
forcing me to run compiz --replace.

How can I get gnome-appearance-properties to let me enable Visual
Effects/compiz?
