In the new gcalctool you must explicitly add the base. You can do this by
pressing the x_16 button in programming mode to enter FF in hexadecimal:
FF₁₆
In gcalctool 5.29.92 (not yet released) the shortcut key for this is Ctrl+H
The setting for display format only affects the format that results are
displayed in.
