Thanks for taking time to report this bug and help make ubuntu better. can you please try to install the latest empathy from the telepathy ppa to install the latest empathy sudo add-apt-repository ppa:telepathy/ppa ;sudo apt-get update ;sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and then reboot that most probably solve the problem for you.
