Binary package hint: evolution
Evolution periodically performs send/receive operations according to
specified time intervals. However, sometimes the process locks up and
evolution turns to gray scale indicating something has locked up or the
servers are not responding. The problem is that any email that is being
composed at the time also locks up and turns to gray scale with no way
to save the current working draft of that email. The only recourse is
to terminate Evolution which also terminates the draft email that could
not be saved.
Having Evolution lockup is problematic but having the draft email editor
lock up as well is catastrophic and needs to be fixed.
Fortunately, Evolution saves the draft email periodically so that it can
be partially recovered the next time Evolution is launched. I think the
email editor needs to be launched as a separate thread or application
from Evolution so that when or if Evolution locks up it doesn't take
down the draft email and editor in a no survivors scenario.
Indications that Evolution locks up during send/receive include no
animation on the send/receive "Fetching Email" activity on the task bar
as well as Evolution fading to gray scale during the lock up. There is
no indication that the email servers are timing out as Evolution doesn't
seem to recover after extended wait times during send/receive. For this
bug report, ten email accounts are checked during every send/receive
activity and no testing has been done to see if this is not a problem
when only a single email account is involved.
The problem frequency is approximately about one in thirty send/receive
transactions and so it is not readily reproducible. Normally when email
servers take a while to respond the animation is working and Evolution
eventually responds and at no point does it fade to gray scale. This
indicates perhaps Evolution truly is locking up in a non-recoverable
state and not just having server timeout issues.
