I don't know specifically which package this affects, but since it
occurred in totem and rhythmbox and not VLC, I suspect it's somehow a
gstreamer problem.

Here's how this happened:
I'm using a Greasemonkey script that lets me watch YouTube videos in the
embedded Totem player for FLV.
The videos were all doing fine until suddenly my audio stopped working. I
checked a few other videos to confirm that the embedded Totem was no longer
playing audio.
I copied the video's address to VLC. In VLC, the video played fine, audio and
everything.
I disabled the Greasemonkey script and found that audio was also working
perfectly in the regular Flash 10 player.
I had Rhythmbox running, at this point I asked it to play some of my music. It
tried several different songs in rapid succession before freezing completely,
at which point I closed it.
I later tried to switch VLC to the ALSA plugin to experiment with different
audio services, but VLC also froze.
I tried restarting X, but nothing seemed to happen.
A recent check of pstree shows approximately 15 processes active for each of
VLC and Rhythmbox, both of which have long since frozen and been forced to quit.

This is on Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit, with Rhythmbox 0.11.6 and Totem 2.24.3.
As I was attempting to get a version number for Gstreamer just now, I found
gstreamer-properties. GStreamer is set to PulseAudio for output, and when I
test it, it says, "Failed to connect: Connection refused"

I ran "pulseaudio" in a terminal and found that the audio test worked fine when
pulseaudio was running. I tried "pulseaudio &", however gstreamer-properties
froze with the error "failed to connect stream: invalid argument"
pstree shows that gstreamer-properties has spawned 16 child processes for some
reason.

Although gstreamer-properties can't connect to it, the pulseaudio server
appears to be running again and I have sound.
I guess pulseaudio died somehow.

** Affects: totem (Ubuntu)

         Status: Incomplete
