Well, I'm on Ubuntu 9.10 and have a computer of i386, I also experience this problem and I can describe it in details: If you are not playing a track, you can move the volume control in rhythmbox's GUI up and down and it won't crash, but when you are playing a track, move the slider either up or down a little will cause rhythmbox to shut down, but itself don't regard it as a crash for I check my /var/crash dir and find nothing (I use Gnome desktop). Then I have to restart thythmbox again. Now when I'm playing a track and want to change the volume, I can only use hotkey -- ctrl + up and ctrl + down to control the volume or change the master volume of the system. So that's my observation and hope that could help the developers figure out what's the small bug that affects this.
